Taking 5 with SAE’s 2022 Contributor of the Year Kunjan Vyas

When you talk to Kunjan Vyas about her work in STEM education, her passion is palpable. 

The Detroit Public School Community District (DPSCD) educator is a longtime champion of SAE International’s A World In Motion® (AWIM®), serving for more than 17 years as an advocate for SAE’s STEM learning solutions. She was an integral part in bringing AWIM programs into DPSCD, convincing her principal to bring the programs into district classrooms, and has continued her advocacy across the district and through leadership changes. 

It only takes a few moments with Mrs. Vyas for her to start chatting about the difference she’s seen in students’ lives as she’s worked with AWIM to bring high-quality STEM learning experiences to students, and by the end of your conversation, she’ll have you signed up to start your own volunteer work within your community.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Mrs. Vyas earned the title of SAE International’s 2022 Contributor of the Year, a recognition given to volunteers who go above and beyond in their work with SAE—and yet the veteran educator was perhaps the only person in the room who did not expect to hear her name announced as Top Contributor.

“I’m just completely surprised! I never believed in a million years someone was going to put me there,” Mrs. Vyas said.

Upon receiving the award, she took the time to reaffirm her commitment to AWIM, and in classic Mrs. Vyas fashion, invited all contributors to get involved in the program alongside her.

“I just told them on the stage, that until I die and as long as I am able to work it…I will make sure (AWIM) is run,” she said.
