Mentor Spotlight: Jay Zhou, Ph.D., JHZ Strategic QA

Posted: January 17, 2022

Throughout the month of January, we’re recognizing members of our SAE Mentor community who share their experience and expertise with young professionals and engineering students as they shape the future of mobility.

In his more than 17 years as a member of SAE International, Jay Zhou, Ph.D., has accomplished quite a bit. Throughout his career, Zhou has the opportunity to interface with industry leaders as one himself. During his professional journey, Zhou worked with the Ford Motor Company for 28 years where he ascended to Vice President of China and Asia Pacific Quality and New Model Programs, growing a professional network through his SAE International connections, and eventually becoming a mentor to young professionals—and that all started with an SAE mentor of his own.

“As a mentee, the most valuable mentoring connection is growing my professional network and developing my leadership skills,” Zhou said. “As a mentor, the most meaningful connection is developing my feedback and critical thinking skills. The SAE Mentorship Program is a very innovative platform that provides a great opportunity to give back.”

In addition to his work with young professionals, Zhou has built up quite the resume at SAE. He’s served as chair of the organizing committee for the 2021 SAE-AWC Automotive Electronics Innovation Conference, the Associate Editor for SAE Journal of Materials and Manufacturing for over 10 years, a member of the SAE Advisory Board, instructor for SAE professional development training for FMEA and DV/PV, author of technical papers for SAE Transaction, a presenter for SAE’s World Conference (WCX) and a WCX session organizer.
