An Investment In The Future: How Jaguar Land Rover Is Leading The Way For Battery Technology In The UK

Posted: September 21, 2023

The automotive industry has been undergoing a revolutionary shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions. As the demand for electric cars increases, automakers are striving to meet the market's needs by establishing cutting-edge battery factories.

In the United Kingdom, Jaguar Land Rover Automotive has pioneered this transition, announcing a state-of-the-art battery factory to meet the increasing demand for electric vehicles. The new plant in Somerset – in which Indian automotive manufacturer Tata Motors has invested around £4bn, alongside government subsidies. The battery factory is expected to create 4,000 UK jobs and thousands more across wider supply chain networks.

Described as the most important investment in UK automotive industries since Nissan arrived in the 1980s, the gigafactory (a manufacturing facility for components and products associated with electrification and decarbonisation technologies) will be one of the largest in Europe and will initially make batteries for Jaguar Land Rover vehicles like the Range Rover, Defender and Jaguar brands. Plans call for the supply of other car manufacturers in the future.

Worldwide Electrification

The EV market is expected to witness exponential growth over the coming years; in the UK alone, the demand for electric cars is expected to skyrocket, especially with the UK government’s plan to ban the sale of cars powered by petrol and diesel by 2030.

As batteries typically account for a large proportion of electric vehicle value, a reliable supply is expected to be vital for the future of the UK car industry. The commitments of Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors signify the immense potential and long-term viability of the EV sector within the UK.

Employment Upskill

As technologies advance, so too must the way in which we utilise and approach these new tools. The SAE Battery Academy, in partnership with InnoEnergy, provides courses specifically designed to prepare individuals for emerging roles in battery technology, manufacturing, and maintenance. The courses cover a wide range of topics, including:

With a combination of theoretical, technical and application-based topics, the Academy builds valuable skills, instrumental to securing job placements within the burgeoning EV sector.

A Brighter Future

Working within the EV sector contributes to a more sustainable future. As electric vehicles become integral to the global fight against climate change, professionals employed in this sector play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmentally friendly practices.

Electrification presents a transformative opportunity for individuals to upskill and embark on a rewarding career path in a forward-thinking industry. With its industry-specific curriculum, hands-on experience, and valuable networking opportunities, the SAE Battery Academy, in Partnership with InnoEnergy, offers the perfect means to thrive in the dynamic and fast-growing electric vehicle sector.
