Hybrid electric vehicles continue to be a part of the overall solution toward zero emission vehicles. To meet current and future demands in the HEV and PHEV markets, success will depend on engineering and support personnel having and maintaining a thorough understanding of HEV related technologies.

Learning Objectives

By attending this course you will be able to:

  • Explain the major resources and regulatory drivers of hybrid electric vehicle development
  • Identify the system architectures of hybrid electric vehicles that have been commercialized from 1997 to the present
  • Describe and identify basic hybrid components and architectures and explain HEVs'  differences from conventional vehicles
  • Identify the main HEV development considerations for various vehicle systems
  • Recognize basic layouts of light, medium, and full hybrid vehicle powertrains
  • Compare advantages and disadvantages of different hybrid architectures
  • Identify and understand how HEV drive systems of the Prius and P2s work and the challenges they meet
  • Describe and evaluate HEV emerging technologies, engineering challenges, and development trends

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for individuals working in engineering, marketing, and manufacturing of powertrain systems along with other electrical and mechanical aspects of HEVs, including PHEVs and REEVs.  Information presented in this course will be of value to those working with renewable energy and transportation systems.

Prerequisites

An undergraduate degree in engineering or a strong technical background is highly recommended. Participants should have taken an undergraduate or graduate course in basic mechanics and basic electronics.

You must complete all course contact hours and successfully pass the learning assessment to obtain CEUs.

Zhihui Duan

Mr. Duan is currently Chief Engineer, Hybrid Electric Vehicles at Chery Automotive.  Previously, Mr. Duan served as Technical Director of Hybrid Electric Powertrains at Changan New Energy Automobile Inc. China, where he was involved with developing full hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. He led a program to develop new generation HEVs and works on power system architecture design, product development, powertrain control, and energy management. He was also involved with developing an Atkinson cycle engine, which improves fuel efficient significantly. Mr. Duan also previously worked with the Sustainable Mobility Technologies at Ford Motor Co., where he was involved in developing new generation hybrid transaxles. He led the effort to fix the transaxle problems that Escape Hybrid vehicles had in the field and to improve quality and reliability. As a result, he was awarded Ford's Current Model Quality Award: Best in Ford Transmission Warranty Performance. Mr. Duan received his B.S. Aerospace Engineering from Beijing Institute of Aeronautics, a M.S. Aerospace Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology, and his M.S. Reliability Engineering from the University of Maryland.
