Air Conditioning System - Passenger Car Development and Design Verification 2003-01-3613

Since the advent of the automotive air conditioning system in the late thirties, many things have undergone extensive change. Improvements, such as wind tunnel tests and overall durability, have added complexity to today's modern air conditioning system.
Today, no matter the weather conditions, an automotive A/C system can make a human body comfortable and maintain all glass areas free of ice on the outside and fog or mist on the inside.
A definition of automotive AC system is:
“To allow the safe operation of a vehicle in all kind of weather by making a human body thermally comfortable and, maintaining all glass areas free of ice on the outside and fog or mist on the inside.”
The purpose of this paper is to present the basic development principles and the methodology applied to certify an A/C system.
