Design Optimization of Engine Bolts in Noise and Vibration Performance Development using FEM 2006-01-0282

The number and position of engine bolt is determined in early stage of engine development process. In addition they are determined in consideration of various requirement performances. While the engine bolts between main power plant parts influence noise and vibration performance of engine. It has been reported that vibration characteristics of an engine is depended on the number and position of engine bolts. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for optimizing the number and positions of engine bolts to take a balance between cost and noise vibration performance of an engine. An automatic analysis system is integrated with finite element method application by a general-purpose optimization system, where the concept of Modal Assurance Criterion is introduced for automatic and quantitative mode tracking in vibration mode analysis with FEM. Moreover, the unique technique is mentioned for visualizing calculated results of number and positions of engine bolts.
