Utilization of MotionView for Automotive Strength and Durability Analysis - Application and Correlation 2009-01-1196

Automobile companies devote a lot of time and expense to the analysis of a vehicle’s chassis and body for durability. There are many tools available to address the reliability of components, including hand calculations, traditional finite element analysis (FEA), multi-body dynamics (MBD), and actual testing. While full vehicle testing can consume a lot of resources, multi-body dynamics allows for full vehicle simulations to be performed with a good balance of solution time, modeling requirements, and results accuracy.
This paper describes the utilization of MotionView (MV) to make it suitable for reusable automotive strength and durability analysis. The purpose is to allow for model building with minimum to no test data while still achieving an acceptable solution. The general methods and challenges for each type of analysis (static, 4-post, and test course load prediction) are shown. The use of flexible components and correlation to bench and proving grounds (PG) data are also presented.
