City Vehicle XAM 2.0: Design and Optimization of its Plug-In E-REV Powertrain 2014-01-1822

In the nowadays cities the personal mobility is one of the main goals to achieve in the automotive field, especially in consideration of the European emission and consumption standards set for 2020. Electrification of the existing car platform is not the answer and is not achievable in short period. Moreover problems like proportions of the vehicles and the cost of batteries and their weight to maintain the same range of performances makes necessary to define different vehicles, designed “around” their powertrains.
Hybrid powertrains seem to be the right solution especially for small cars, like sub-A segment cars.
In this paper a real case study is presented, the step by step designing phase, the system dimensioning and the selection of the different subsystems of XAM 2.0 city vehicle, an innovative prototype designed by a small group of people at the Politecnico di Torino.
The choice of the different subsystem was a delicate activity in consideration of the efficiency required by each single solution and the necessity to interface all the others entities of the powertrain and of the data-logging system with the communication protocol CAN bus. The solution adopted was composed as follows:
  • an IPM electric motor;
  • three Li-Po battery packs with integrated BMS;
  • a Wankel Engine;
  • a central actuation control unit or AKU;
Thanks to the solutions adopted XAM 2.0 won the first prize as “Best Range Extender Prototype” at the Brighton-London Future Car Challenge 2012, running with different OEMs and Car Makers.
