The Design of a Small Pressurized Aircraft Structure 670259

A recent trend in the light aircraft division of the business aircraft industry is toward cabin pressurization and higher operating altitudes. Factors affecting the design of the fuselage on these aircraft include pressurization schedules, intended operation of the aircraft, environmental limits, cabin configurations, production methods, FAA fatigue strength requirements, tests and evaluation, economics, and sealing techniques. Programs and techniques developed for the transport industry are not necessarily useful in light aircraft applications.
This paper discusses selection of cross-sectional shapes, evolution of basic design philosophies (“safe life” versus “fail safe” approach), and materials and stress levels used in the design of small pressurized aircraft structures.
